The Green Flash Picture I Missed…

I was reviewing my pictures of sunset from last week and found a hidden gem.  Normally green flashes occur right at sunset.  Therefore, I missed this one which was taken well before sunset.  I cropped it to give us the best view of the flash.  Click the image for the full size version.

Just goes to show, you can see green flashes much earlier than most people think!

I think this – pretty frequent – phenomenon should be called a “green segment” to distinguish it from the “green flash” proper where the Sun is all but gone and only green rays still reach you, magnified in intensity by an inferior mirage: see for example the final view in this sunset sequence from Tenerife and the explanations there.
